ANOTHER SPACE is pleased to announce Echoes of Maldoror, a group exhibition exploring the literary and visual legacy of Isidore Ducasse, known as the Comte de Lautréamont, and his landmark work, Les Chants de Maldoror, first published in 1869.

A major influence on Surrealism’s subversive, anti-establishment sensibility, Lautréamont’s macabre and deeply disturbing visionary text challenged the moral values of the 19th century and helped revolutionize modern thought. Its most famous passage describes beauty as “the fortuitous encounter upon a dissecting-table of a sewing machine and an umbrella.” His fragmentary, often violent and hallucinatory language anticipated and catalyzed the ruptures of literary and artistic modernity, inspiring artists to break with European canonical traditions and embrace forms of nihilistic rebellion through blasphemy, erotic violence, moral transgression, and monstrous hybridity.

Curated by Estrellita B. Brodsky and Laura Bardier, Echoes of Maldoror brings together historical and contemporary artists whose work engages with Lautréamont’s enduring themes of blasphemy, metamorphosis, violence, and desire. Spanning painting, photography, sculpture, and moving image, the exhibition explores the ways artists have responded—directly and indirectly—to the anti-hero Maldoror’s cruel humor, dark lyricism, and hallucinatory vision. Together, these works reveal the continuing resonance of Lautréamont’s imagination across generations, challenging the boundaries between beauty and brutality, reality and fantasy, and the human and the monstrous.
